Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), like other universities in Tanzania, is currently encountering financial challenges primarily due to rising operating costs, limited reliance on traditional student tuition,  and other reasons.

In response to these challenges, through the HEET project support, SUA is committed to exploring alternative sources of income. The university aims to establish supplementary revenue streams by engaging in various activities, including technology transfer through consultancy work, forming partnerships or alliances with other organizations for the commercialization of innovations, offering commercial laboratory services, selling forest and non-timber products, selling livestock and farm products, and renting out conference facilities.

However, successfully implementing these services and products requires the formulation of a robust commercialization strategy.

To achieve this, the following steps will be taken:

  1. Strengthening the University Marketing Office to effectively market and commercialize laboratory services and other offerings available at SUA.
  2. Implementing a strategy to commercialize innovations generated within the university.
  3. Developing a plan to commercialize farm produce, livestock, and their related products produced by SUA.
  4. Providing training to staff members in consultancy services and grant writing skills to enhance their expertise in these areas.
  5. Procuring a motor vehicle to facilitate transportation for project administration and the promotion of innovations and income-generating activities.

By following these steps, Sokoine University of Agriculture aims to diversify its income sources and ensure its financial sustainability in the face of current challenges.
