The Higher Education for Economic Transformation (HEET) Project has joined forces with the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) to enhance their curricula.

During the second day of the Capacity Building Training for Curriculum Development and Improvement at SUA, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raphael Chibunda urged participants to utilize the training to gain insights and create curricula that meet the demands of the job market.

Prof. Chibunda

Speaking at the event held on April 25, 2023, at the Edward Moringe Campus in Morogoro, Prof. Chibunda emphasized that SUA needs to improve its curricula to provide students with the skills, expertise, and employability prospects.

To achieve this goal, he explained that SUA requires curricula that integrate contemporary knowledge in line with the job market’s needs, emphasizing competency, skill enhancement, and adherence to international standards.

Dr.Mtitu

One of the facilitators of the training, Dr. Evaristo Mtitu, who is the Senior Officer for Higher Education at the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology and Assistant Coordinator of the HEET Project, highlighted one of the project’s objectives: curriculum revitalization and development.

The HEET Project aims to introduce at least 300 new curricula and enhance existing ones to meet both current and future national requirements, empowering students with the knowledge and skills for employability. Consequently, the training will empower SUA’s academic staff to ensure that the improved curricula are conducive to equipping students with relevant expertise.

In the past, the curricula mainly focused on nurturing students’ thinking abilities rather than empowering them to be innovative, proactive job seekers, or creators of employment opportunities. Dr. Mtitu expressed confidence that the training would encourage SUA’s academic staff to return to their respective departments and develop curricula that align with these criteria.
